3 Weeks In Bali Itinerary

{Your Guide To Backpacking Bali}

If you’ve read our one week in Bali blog but feel as though you need more time to explore Bali’s beauty, extending it to anywhere up to three weeks might be more ideal.

In my eyes, you can never spend too much time in Bali, however, you can certainly do a lot in Bali within a three week period. There’s always something new to see, another waterfall waiting to be explored, another beach to tackle, or another beach club to party at.

21 days in Bali is more than enough time to see all of the best attractions and still have time to relax too. With that being said, we have created the perfect Bali 3 week itinerary to help you navigate through the long list of must-see destinations and most breathtaking sights.

Days 1-4: Seminyak or Canggu

As soon as you arrive in Denpasar, head straight for Seminyak or Canggu (whichever you prefer). This area is usually everyone’s first stop on their Bali backpacking route because it’s easy to get to and it’s located quite central, making it a great base for all of your Bali adventures.

I’ve put either Seminyak OR Canggu for days 1-4 of your three week Bali itinerary, as they are so close to each other yet quite different from one another, so you can just choose which destination you prefer. I don’t see it as necessary to stay in both areas, however, if you wish to split 2 days in Seminyak and 2 days in Canggu, you can also do that too if you wish.

To summarize the differences between Canggu and Seminyak, Canggu has a chilled-out, surfer/hippy vibe, whereas Seminyak has a busier, more upmarket vibe to it. Either way, they’re located next to each other on the map, so even if you choose to stay in Seminyak, you’d still be able to experience Canggu while you’re there (and vice versa).

Days 4-7: Ubud

If you don’t visit Ubud at one point or another while you’re backpacking Bali, did you really even visit Bali? Ubud is an absolute staple in everyone’s Bali itinerary, and trust me when I say you won’t regret it.

It’s the land of waterfalls and rice terraces, and there’s beauty in quite literally every direction you turn. Not to mention Ubud offers a level of serenity that is above anywhere else in Bali. The sweet sounds of nature are something you will love waking up to during your Ubud Bali Itinerary.

Some of our favorite things to do in Ubud include:

I’ve only mentioned a few things here, but Ubud is rich with adventure and nature-related activities that will keep you busy.  Which is why I would allow no less than 3 nights (4 days in Ubud).

Days 7-10: Nusa Penida

If you include Nusa Penida in your Bali itinerary, it just might end up being the highlight of your trip. It’s only an easy 30-minute ferry ride from Bali mainland, and it is beyond worth it.

There are endless Nusa Penida sights that will leave you in awe at the beauty that is spread across Indonesia. I know you’ve all seen pictures of Kelingking Beach floating around social media, and let me tell you, it’s even more incredible in real life.

Kelingking Beach isn’t the only reason to visit Nusa Penida, some of our other favorite things to do in Nusa Penida include:

Nusa Penida is still quite undeveloped and some of the roads are basically gravel, so it’s a bit more of an effort to get to places like Kelingking Beach and Suwehan Beach, but it is worth every effort and I’d do it over and over again in a heartbeat.

Days 10-12: Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Ceningan

If you’re going to make the effort to visit Nusa Penida during your 3 weeks in Bali backpacking tour, you may as well complete the Nusa Islands trio and visit Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. It only takes about a 10-minute boat ride to get from Nusa Penida to Nusa Lembongan.

The great thing here is that Nusa Lembongan is connected to Nusa Ceningan by a little yellow bridge, so you can knock out two birds with one stone and easily walk across or scooter across to the neighboring island for the day.

You probably only need about 2 days to visit Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, and out of the 2 days, most of your time should be spent in Nusa Lembongan since Nusa Cenigan is so small.

Days 12-15: Gili Trawangan

Everyone has a crazy story about partying in Gili T, and not one person has told me they didn’t like it. In fact, everyone loves Gili T, and just the Gili Islands in general.

With that being said, I will mention that there’s not a whole lot to do in the Gili Islands apart from sunbaking and partying, which is why I recommend  3 days here, however, if you’re anything like us and can’t walk away from partying then feel free to stay longer. We stayed for 5 days, went to Lombok and then came back to Gili Trawangan for another 5 days… oops! I regret nothing.

Besides the hedonistic party scene that brings Gili T alive every night, the beaches and the sunsets in Gili T are exceptionally beautiful. Additionally, if you are into white sandy beaches with perfect, crystal blue water, (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?) you won’t be disappointed with the Gili Islands.

While you’re here you may as well take a little boat ride to Gili Air and Gili Meno for the day, just to experience the full beauty of the Gili Islands as they are truly unlike anywhere else in this 3 weeks in Bali itinerary.

Days 15-18: Lombok

So after your antics in the Gili Islands, it’s the perfect time to take a boat to Lombok and explore this completely underrated island of Indonesia.

Yes! There is more to Indonesia than just Bali! The Gili Islands are actually technically part of Lombok, therefore Lombok is closer to the Gili Islands than Bali is.

The boat ride from Lombok to the Gili Islands takes around 20-25 minutes, whereas the boat from Bali to the Gili Islands can take around 1.5 hours or even longer depending on which ferry you take.

I recommend spending about 3 nights, 4 days in Lombok, which will give you enough time to see quite a bit on your Lombok bucket list.

Days 18-21: Uluwatu

So from Lombok, you can take a quick 40-minute flight back to the island of Bali. Uluwatu is the perfect last stop on your 3 weeks in Bali itinerary where you can soak up the sun and take in that flawless cliffside view that Uluwatu is so renowned for.

Some of our favorite things to do in Uluwatu include:

On another note, it only takes about 30-40 minutes to drive from Uluwatu to the airport (which isn’t that much longer than traveling from Denpasar), which makes Uluwatu the ideal destination to end your 3 weeks in Bali trip.

However, if you can spend even longer than just 3 weeks in Bali (or all Indonesia), I would try and visit North Bali, Komodo Island, and Java. Fitting these destinations into your Indonesia itinerary will be a game-changer and you truly will explore off the beaten track.
