Can You Stay On Nusa Penida?
Contrary to popular belief, Nusa Penida Island offers backpackers more than just beaches and endless exploration.
There is a vast assortment of Nusa Penida accommodation on the island ranging from budget hostels all the way to nice seaside villas.
In fact, as Nusa Penida grows in popularity as one of the best places to visit in Bali, so do the number of accommodation choices with more and more popping up each day.
However keep in mind, compared to other places in Bali, Nusa Penida is still considered rather undeveloped, so you might have to temper expectations a bit when staying here.
Where To Stay In Nusa Penida?
The best area to stay in Nusa Penida is a bit arbitrary. However, the vast majority of the Nusa Penida hotels and hostels can be found on the north side of the island near Toya Pakeh.
Toya Pakeh is the most popular harbor town in Nusa Penida providing visitors with easy access to ferries and daily island boat tours.
In addition to this, with an assortment of hotels, restaurants and a few shopping options too, Toya Pakeh is often considered one of the best areas to stay on Nusa Penida.
However, with that being said, do not feel obligated to stay here, because choosing accommodation anywhere on the north side of Nusa Penida Island will do just fine.
The island is so large and spread out that you will need to take a motorbike or car transport anywhere you decide to go.
Therefore, there is a limited benefit of staying in Toya Pakeh.
How Long To Stay On Nusa Penida?
Some travelers decide to stay on Nusa Lembongan and take day trips from there because the island is a bit more developed.
However, I highly recommend booking accommodation on Nusa Penida Island for at least 3-4 days.
Out of the three Nusa Islands, Nusa Penida by far has the largest assortment of things to see and do. Therefore, a day trip to Penida will not be enough time at all and will inevitably leave you quite unsatisfied.
Best Nusa Penida Hostels
Although Nusa Penida doesn’t have a huge selection of hostels on the island there are defiantly a few worth mentioning.
Although, keep in mind, unlike places like Canguu, Seminyak or Gili Trawangan, this destination is not known as a lively social environment and is rather undeveloped.
While the Nusa Penida hostels do present wonderful opportunities to meet other travelers, don’t expect a social atmosphere like other hostels you may have stayed at during your trip.
Nusa Penida is pretty much all about the hiking and sightseeing, therefore the vibes of the hostels on Nusa Penida reflect that.
Hostelworld Rating: 9.4
Without a doubt, this is the best Nusa Penida hostel on the island, and typically backpackers first choice when visiting the island.
Nuansa Penida Hostel is located on the west side of the island around 1 mile from Toya Pakeh.
Each dorm room comes equipped with an en-suite bathroom, hot shower, private balcony, and private lockers.
In addition to this, Nuansa Penida Hostel features an outdoor pool and common area, making it easy to meet new friends which is always a plus when traveling.
Dorm prices start from around $15 USD for an 8-bed dorm, making this one of the cheapest places to stay on Nusa Penida for solo backpackers.

The Packer Box is next up on our short list of the best of the Nusa Penida hostels.
Unlike the vast majority of Nusa Penida accommodation, The Packer Box Hostel is located inland about 5 minutes off the main road.
While there is not much that stands out about this hostel, anyone looking for budget accommodation on Nusa Penida should definitely consider this option.
The prices start around $10 USD for an 8-person mixed dorm.
If you’re looking for an extremely affordable option and don’t really care for the extras, then The Packer Box hostel is just the thing for you.

With an eye-catching 9.5 guest rating on a total of 177 different reviews, it’s quite hard to ignore Asoka Bungalows.

Any couple or travel pair looking for where to stay in Nusa Penida on a backpacker budget should consider this place an absolute steal.
Especially once you factor in Asoka’s central location, free breakfast for two and exceptionally clean rooms.

Without a doubt one of the cheapest private bungalows on Nusa Penida, Butterfly Bungalows arguably offers the best prices on the entire island.
With private rooms starting at around $15 USD (during the time that I checked), there is no better place to stay for anyone on a tight budget and traveling in a pair on this island.
Although Butterfly Bungalows has a 9.3 rating on Agoda, keep in mind that at the time of writing this, there were only 16 reviews written.
However, the undeniably affordable room rates make this the perfect option for anyone who is on a strict budget.
Agoda Rating: 8.3
