Budapest Hungary Backpackers Party Guide

"Located in the heart of the Eastern Europe backpacker circuit, it is literally impossible to miss when traveling the region. As far as big European cities go, this one is in a league with Prague and Barcelona as must-see places."

WILD & AWAY GRADE | A

Budapest is one of our favorites, if not our favorite city in Europe. It is very cool looking and it’s filled with backpackers from around the world. There is a lot to do and the party scene is insane. Located in the heart of the Eastern Europe backpacker circuit, it is literally impossible to miss when traveling the region. Partying here is incredible and it is done in quite creative ways. The city is filled with backpacker hostels, the city is inexpensive and nothing seems too far away. As far as big European cities go, this one is in a league with Prague and Barcelona as must-see places.

This city is actually a combination of two cities; Buda and Pest. Buda is the old side, where travellers can visit Hungarian castles, traditional bathhouses and see stunning views of the city, including the bridge connecting the two towns together. Pest is the new side, featuring a crazy atmosphere filled with backpackers who are ready to party into the early hours of the morning. Most travellers stay in Pest, and take day trips over to Buda.

Pro Tip
Transportation – Try and avoid taking taxis because they are quite expensive.

Budapest has an amazing selection of hostels. Filled with travellers trying to meet other travellers and have a good time. There are however four main party hostels and we highly recommend staying in one of these. They are called Carpe Noctem (Original), Carpe Noctem (Vitae), Grandio Party Hostel, and most importantly…

Retox Party Hostel

Budapest, Ó u. 41, 1066 Hungary

budapest hungary backpackers party guide

“Easily one of the best party hostels in Europe, if you’re looking for a constant raging party and not too much sleep then Retox is for you!”

Pros
  • -The craziest party hostel we have ever stayed at
  • -A huge common area where it is impossible to NOT meet people
  • -One of the first stops for the pub crawl
  • -Has many drinking games
  • -A dance room
  • -Very conveniently located
  • -Staff are hilarious
Cons
  • -If you want to sleep, do not stay here
  • -The place is disgusting, and literally looks like it is about to fall apart

DAY LIFE

Beer Bike

This is the BEST way to go sightseeing. Get a group of 15 people, and hop on the back of a bike that has 15 stools circling a bar in the middle. Everyone helps peddle while a sober driver steers and the group has 2 hours of unlimited beer. The bike will bump music and the bystanders on the street are guaranteed to give a wave/smile/plea for a beer. This is a must!

Sziget Festival

One of the oldest music festivals in Europe, as it lasts for 7 days and usually falls in the middle of August. Most people attending this festival camp there, so all day every day, for a week is a party madhouse with tons of things to do. Also a must!

NIGHT LIFE

Danube Boat Party

This is a really good way to see the city at night as it is very well lit up and quite beautiful. In addition, this boat is full of partiers and has several different atmospheres accommodatinbg those who want to see the city, hang out and drink, or dance.

Instant

Definitely our favorite club in Budapest. It has several floors and about 10 different rooms, each with different music and different vibes. This club feels more like a maze and is packed every single night, making it easy to stay there until the sun rises. No matter where we went, we somehow ended up here.

Szimpla

This place is a big two-story building, however, it is different in that it has more places to chill and talk as opposed to almost strictly dancing and raging. Don’t get me wrong though, there are plenty of people still dancing the night away.

Sparty

Takes place every Saturday night at the thermal baths and contrary to the daytime is the furthest thing from a relaxing time. This is literally a booze-filled giant bath party, and one of the craziest parties that we have ever encountered and usually ends up like a free for all.

Traditional Bathhouse

A really chill and relaxing activity to do during the day if you want to cure that hangover and feel like you went back in time a two hundred years. Come here with some friends and let the thermal baths restore you to a condition in which you can rage again during the night!

Buda Castle

Take a day to trek to the Buda side of the city, hike up to the viewing point of this castle, and get a stunning view of the city.

Budget Tips
  1. You guessed it… Pregame!
  2. Eat at Great Market Hall for some cheap Hungarian food!
  3. Take the tram instead of Uber or Taxi. Word of advice.. if you get caught taking the tram without a ticket you will get arrested!
Wild & Away Checklist
  1. Whatever you do..do a sparty!
  2. See the city in style, and take the beer bike
  3. Check out the city at night via boat party cruise
  4. Even if you do not stay at Retox, check out the bar there and experience the madness
  5. View the city from the Buda Castle
  6. If possible, come during the time of the Sziget festival
  7. Stay out at the clubs all night
  8. Detox at the bathhouse during the day
