Perched high in the hills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range is the unique and ever so ingenious Casa Elemento hostel.

Notoriously branded as the place with the “giant hammocks”, Casa Elemento has not just become the most popular hostel in Minca Colombia but is even considered by some as the coolest hostel in the entire country.

Whether this lofty claim holds up to be true or not (lord knows Colombia has no shortage of awesome hostels), it is undeniable that there is something truly special about this Minca Colombia hostel that any backpacker would be lucky to experience.

However, while you may be all ready to book your stay in Casa Elemento, there are some important things to know before you finalize your booking.

So, continue reading to find out everything you need to know in order to properly prepare yourself for a stay in Casa Elemento Minca Colombia.

Important Things To Know About Casa Elemento

casa elemento mincaLike I mentioned above, in a location this remote you can’t exactly walk to the convenient store or nearby restaurant for a quick bite to eat.

However, lucky for you, Casa Elemento provides guests with three meals a day including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

While the meals are not included in the price or anything, they are exceptionally delicious.

And even though the meals are a bit more expensive than the typical Colombian food prices, trust me we when we say you won’t be complaining after finishing your meal.

Seriously Casa Elemento serves some of the best food I have tasted in Colombia.

The only minor drawback is the meals are served at specific hours of the day.

Additionally, for lunch and dinner, the hostel requires you to place your order several hours ahead of time, that way cooks know how much food to make.

However, you are not required to place your order ahead of time for breakfast.  All you have to do is wake up which is a challenge in itself for anyone who likes to sleep in late.

Meal Prices

  • Breakfast | Between 9,000 and 15,000 COP
  • Lunch| Between 15,000 and 18,000 COP
  • Dinner | Between 15,000 and 18,000 COP

Aside from the delicious restaurant, Casa Elemento also has an onsite bar which serves an assortment of beverages and snacks until about 1 a.m when they close for the night.

One of the things I liked most about this hostel is you won’t be required to pay for anything on the spot.

This is because Casa Elemento uses a tab system where you are not actually required to pay for anything until it is time to check out.

Come check out day, the reception will review your tab with you and everything checks out you can pay for it all in one easy payment.

Pro Tip
While there is no ATM in Minca, if you did not bring enough cash with you, Casa Elemteno does accept bank cards.

However, be aware there is an additional fee added on, which is around 3% of the total bill.

If you wish to pay in cash then please remember to withdraw enough money before you depart Santa Marta.

How To Get To Casa Elemento?

casa elemento minca colombia

It’s no surprise that a hostel literally sitting in the clouds of the Sierra Nevada mountain range would be quite the challenge to get to.

You won’t experience most of the challenge until you actually arrive in Minca town, so this is your first step on your journey to Casa Elemento.

Santa Marta to Minca

Most people visiting Minca arrive from the neighboring city of Santa Marta.

While the city of Santa Marta itself is relatively unimpressive, the airport makes it a common connecting city to other popular destinations like Palomino or Minca.

From Santa Marta, you can either take the bus (budget) or a taxi.

The bus from Santa Marta to Minca takes about one hour and costs 8,000 COP.

Buses leave quite often, so there is no need to book your tickets in advance.

The second and more expensive option is to take a taxi.

A taxi only takes around 40 minutes instead of one hour on the bus.

While there is no set price for a taxi, look to pay no more than 80,000 COP.

How To Get From Minca Town To Casa Elemento

Once you arrive in the town of Minca Colombia, your next step is to either hike 2-3 hours up the mountain to Casa Elemento (the budget option).

Or if you’re not in the mood for an epic 3-hour hike up the mountain with all your heavy backpacks (I don’t blame you), then I suggest simply paying for a motorbike rider to take you up there.

The journey only takes 30 – 40 minutes and should cost no more than 20,000 COP.

Not a bad price considering they will save you an exhausting 3 hours of your life.

However, remember that the motorbikes are quite small and the roads are quite bumpy, so the more stuff you bring with you, the more you will suffer holding it all as you go up that mountain.

Nonetheless, in the off chance you could not find anywhere to store your bags and/or you have a big clunky suitcase instead of a backpack, you could always hire a jeep.

To reserve a jeep taxi, it cost around 100,000 COP for about an hour drive up.

Pro Tip
If you are only visiting for a few days, then try to leave your bags at your Santa Marta hostel.

Just ask the front desk if you can place them in storage until you return from Minca.

They should have no problems holding your luggage for you.

We stayed at the hostel La Brisa Loca in Santa Marta and they were quite happy to keep our bags for us until we returned.

How Many Nights Should I Spend At Casa Elemento?

casa elemento minca colombia

You might be surprised that I personally recommend no more than 1-2 nights in Casa Elemento.

While the hostel may be one of the coolest hostels in Colombia, it is also one of the most remote hostels in the country.

This makes quite the challenge anytime you want to leave the hostel for the day.

While this may be no big deal for say for a 1-2 night stay, any longer than that and I could imagine this would become quite frustrating.

Especially when you consider the fact that despite what you may read, there really isn’t that much to do in Minca Colombia.

Sure, there are a couple of decent waterfalls, coffee and birdwatching tours and even a viewpoint you can hike to for sunset, but without a doubt, the best thing to do in Minca Colombia is to experience hostel Casa Elemento.

Additionally, to add fuel to the fire, Casa Elemento does not provide WIFI.

No WIFI for a couple of days is quite refreshing in my opinion, and there’s no better way to reconnect yourself with your surroundings, but there comes a point after a little while where you do want to want to reunify back into the online world… especially when you run an online business!

Therefore, unless you are an avid hiker or are looking to completely get off the grid and relax in a giant hammock the entire time, I would not overstay your welcome.

Pro Tip
While Casa Elemento does not regularly provide WIFI to its guests, in the case of an emergency they will offer temporary access.

Are The Casa Elemento Hammocks Safe?

casa elemento minca colombia

I don’t mean to burst your bubble or anything, but the Casa Elemento hammocks are a bit of an optical illusion.

Although from the photos it may in fact look like you are suspended hundreds of feet in the air, in actuality it is more like four to five feet.

For which we are very grateful.

While a fall from this height would certainly leave a bruise, chances are it wouldn’t send you plummeting to your demise.

However, that is unless you happen to continue rolling down the hill and off the edge, but this is obviously the worst case scenario so don’t panic.

The point is that the hammocks are not actually as dangerous as they look.

Is Minca Colombia Worth Visiting?

casa elemento minca colombia

This all depends on how much time you have during your visit to Colombia.

Similar to the lazy beach town of Palomino, if you are pressed for time then I would suggest either skipping it altogether or simply coming for the day to get some cool pics and hang out at Casa Elemento.

However, if you have a decent amount of time available to backpack the country, then I would definitely spend a few nights in Minca Colombia.

While there aren’t a whole lot of things to do here, it is still a place I would recommend crossing off your Colombia bucket list.

Best Things To Do In Minca Colombia?

casa elemnto minca colombiaPozo Azul

Pozo Azul is the best waterfall in Minca Santa Marta to where you can swim and cliff jump.

To get to Pozo Azul from Minca Town, you can either hike for 1 hour through the jungle or take a 10-minute motorbike.

Lost of people opt to take the hike and then reward themselves for their efforts by jumping in the water to cool off!

Pozo Azul is without a doubt, one of the top things to do in Minca Santa Marta!

La Victoria Coffee Tour

Colombia has some of the best coffee in the world, so it would almost be a crime to not go on a coffee tour!

Finca La Victoria is one of the most famous coffee farms in Northern Colombia and it happens to be in Minca Santa Marta!

A coffee tour at Finca La Victoria only costs COP 10,000 and the tour lasts for 1 hour.

Birdwatching Tour

If you’re someone that is into exotic birds, then Minca Santa Marta is for you!

There have been 635 different species of birds recorded in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, and they are all incredibly colorful and just stunning to look at.

Even if you don’t want to go on a birdwatching tour, you’ll see an abundance of exotically colorful birds just flying around everywhere while you’re in Minca Santa Marta.

Going on a birdwatching tour may not be for everyone, but it is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Minca Santa Marta if you’re a bird enthusiast.

Los Pinos Viewpoint

Los Pinos Viewpoint is the best place in Minca Santa Marta to watch a beautifully orange-hued sunset!

If you’re staying at Casa Elemento for a few days and you’re looking for something to do, I highly recommend making the effort to hike to Los Pinos for sunset!

The hike only takes 45 minutes from Casa Elemento.

While this isn’t the most jaw-dropping view we’ve ever seen, it is quite beautiful at sunset and one of the best things to do in Minca Santa Marta.

Can I Visit Casa Elemento For The Day?

Although you will have to purchase a day pass, yes Casa Elemento does allow visitors.

The day passes only cost 10,000 COP (which is approximately $3.33 USD) and includes a complimentary drink as well.
