The Last Guide You’ll Ever Need

Cenotes are hands down the Riviera Maya’s most famous natural attraction and it’s not hard to understand why. These gorgeous natural sinkholes are breathtakingly beautiful and Cenote Ik Kil is a fine illustration of just how stunning they actually are.

Known as the cream of the crop when it comes to the top cenotes in the Riviera Maya, Ik Kil Cenote is most certainly the most popular cenote in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Embellished with esthetically pleasing hanging vines and tree roots that dangle all the way from the top of the cave and down to the water below like a curtain is a pure work of art. Apart from this, the walls of this almost perfectly circular cenote are sheathed in deep green vegetation that only continues to add to its dramatic appearance.

About Ik Kil Cenote

  • Cenote Ik Kil is known as a cave type cenote that spans about 200 feet in diameter and about 130 feet deep below the water.

  • The water level is about 85 feet below the surface of this massive sinkhole with a beautifully carved stairway that leads visitors to the lagoon below.

  • Ik Kil Cenote is located nearby to several other big attractions in the Yucatan region including the world-famous Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza along with the Instagram famous Suytun Cenote. Most Ik Kil Cenote tours include Chichen Itza on the itinerary, however, for those that wish to see Cenote Suytun as well will have to search a bit harder.

  • Like most Riviera Maya cenotes, Ik Kil was considered a sacred place among the Mayan people. Interestingly enough, the Mayans used Ik Kil as a location for human sacrifice to their rain god. In the past, archeologists and divers have oftentimes recovered a collection of bones and ancient artifacts hidden under the water’s surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is A Cenotes In Riviera Maya?

Considered to be sacred by the Mayan people, cenotes are natural sinkholes that are created once the ceiling collapses to reveal the underwater system below. In fact, cenotes were considered to be the only source of water for the Mayans, which is why they are indeed so sacred.

Interestingly enough most of the sinkholes on this list are connected to each other through either one of two subterranean water systems called Sac Actun (219 miles long) and Ox Bel Ha (270 miles long).

Cenote Ik Kil Jump Height?

Though jumping from the top of the cenote is for the most part strictly forbidden, there are special dive competitions occasionally hosted at Ik Kil Cenote where daring divers plunge nearly 85 feet into the water below.

However, aside from that, there is another lifeguard-controlled platform jump where visitors can go for their adrenaline rush.  Once you reach the bottom of the stairway, the Ik Kil Cenote jump will be located directly ahead of you.  There are two different platforms that tourists can jump from with one around 9 feet in height and the other around 18 feet.

With that being said, if you arrive at the site during prime time, expect the wait for the Ik Kil Cenote cliff jump to be quite long.  So long in fact, that it makes the whole “cliff jumping experience” not even worth it.

How Deep Is Ik Kil Cenote?

At a whopping 130 ft deep, no one should ever worry about hitting their head on the bottom during a dive from any height at Ik Kil Cenote.
