The Most Stunning Riviera Maya Cenote

Arguably one of the most Insta-famous cenotes in all of Mexico, Cenote Suytun resembles a place straight out of a fairytale.

This distinctive cave cenote features a perfectly situated break in the ceiling that flawlessly allows the above sunrays to shine through giving one of the most majestic and unique visual displays.

As if not already beautiful enough, the government built a platform located directly under the location of gleaming sunlight, thus crafting one of the most Instagrammable places in Mexico.

Though it is located a hop and a skip away from the touristy region of the Riviera Maya where you will most likely be staying, the journey to Cenote Suytun is every bit worth the effort.

In this blog, we will tell you everything you need to know about your journey to the famous Suytun Cenote in order to help make the long journey a bit easier.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Cenote Suytun Valladolid?

Though not quite as busy as the nearby Ik Kil Cenote, Cenote Suytun does still get quite crowded.

If your goal is to visit without any other tourists, then your best bet is to visit first thing in the morning when it opens.

However, if you want the famous picture with the gleaming beam of sunlight shining through, then you will want to visit Suytun Cenote sometime around noon as this is when the sun is directly overhead and produces the best effect. Just don’t be surprised if you have to wait in a bit of a line before you are able to take your photo.

Most people only need about a minute at a time in order to capture their shot, so the line does seem to move pretty quickly.

With that being said, snorkeling is allowed at the Suytun Cenote so there might be some orange floaties in the background of your shot.

Pro Tip

Suytun Cenote tours are very popular from the Riviera Maya and typically cost around $60.

If there are tour buses in the parking lot upon your arrival to Cenote Suytun then don’t even bother parking the car.  Instead just come back later, otherwise prepare to deal with 200-300 tourists all waiting to capture the same shot.  Talk about a buzz kill.

Most tour buses arrive around 11 a.m to 1 p.m, therefore I highly suggest to avoid these hours. In fact, during my visit to the Suytun Cenote, I arrived around 3 p.m and was still able to capture the perfect shot.

What Are The Best Things To Do Near Cenote Suytun?

Considering the distance away from the Riviera Maya that you must travel in order to reach Cenote Suytun, I highly recommend you kill two birds with one stone and visit some of the other local attractions in the area during your trip.

Ik Kil Cenote – This is the most popular cenote near the Riviera Maya and often the first location to fill up with tourists.  If its over-tourism is any indication, the Ik Kil Cenote is beautiful beyond words and is the perfect attraction to add to the Cenote Suytun trip.

Ik Kil Cenote is located 45 minutes past Cenote Suytun. However, despite its distance, if there is one cenote that is worth the extra effort, it is Cenote Ik Kil.

Chichen Itza – Chichen Itza is a complex of Mayan ruins found within the Yucatan Peninsula. As one of the Seven Wonders Of The World, Chichen Itza should be number one atop your Riviera Maya bucket list.

Chichen Itza is located approximately a one hour drive away from Cenote Suytun, however, I don’t think I need to further explain to you the travel significance of a place like this, so you’d better just go see it for yourself.

What Is The Best Times To See The Sunbeam At Cenote Suytun?

Depending on what time you arrive, as the sun passes overhead, the Suytun Cenote will put on a dazzling sun ray spectacle creating a flawless shot as the light shines perfectly down into the center of the cenote.

The best time to see the sunbeam is anytime from 11 a.m – 1 p.m, just as the sun begins to move overhead of the small crack in the ceiling of the cenote.  Although, you could visit later to avoid the heavy flow of tourists at these hours. Just keep in mind the sunlight beam won’t be as strong.

Should I Take A Suytun Cenote Tour?

Suytun Cenote tours are available from anywhere throughout the Riviera Maya, however, I advise against these tours if photography is your primary goal of visiting.  The Suytun Cenote tours will all arrive at the worst possible time meaning that there will be an estimate of 300 other tourists there with you.  Virtually making it impossible to get the perfect shot.

Instead, I recommend driving yourself, that way you can visit during one of the less busy hours.
