Europe vs Asia

Which is the better continent to travel?

Europe vs Asia Main Image

When I first saw the movie “Eurotrip”, I became hell-bent on visiting Europe to try my best to recreate what I saw on screen.

The chance to see famous sights such as the Louvre and The Vatican, party with English soccer hooligans, go to insane nightclubs in Eastern Europe (minus the making-out-with-your-sister part), and find true love with a beautiful and sexually liberated German girl was all far too irresistible to go through life without experiencing.

When I first saw the movie “The Beach”, I then became hell-bent on visiting Asia to try my best to recreate what I saw on screen.

The chance to venture alone into a faraway beautiful land to meet other backpackers, fall in lust with a beautiful French girl, do crazy shit like drinking snake blood, and find a new home at a “beach resort for people who don’t like beach resorts” was all far too irresistible to go through life without experiencing.

Similar to the mindset of many travelers, there is almost no place that I wouldn’t go. I had so much desire to visit both Asia and Europe that it was hard to say which one I wanted more.

After traveling to both continents and creating crazy personal stories of my own, the question has now arisen of: Europe vs Asia? Which is the better continent for travelers?

The first topic of this Europe vs Asia discussion is the very important subject of scenery.

Both continents have immense beauty, however the different climates and histories of the regions create different types of beauty. Europe is well known for its medieval architecture and ruins.

Entire cities like Prague, Budapest, and Vienna are stunning and what one would fantasize Europe to look like. There are iconic sights to see such as the Tower of London, Sagrada Familia, Eiffel Tower, and Neuschwanstein Castle.

The cities are enchanting, and the countrysides are pleasant.

The best natural beauty can be found in places such as Italy’s Amalfi Coast and Greece’s Shipwreck Beach. The Mediterranean region of Europe in general has beautiful beaches and breathtaking views, which are some of the best places to visit during the summer.

Vernazza, Italy

While there is much to see in terms of Asian architecture such as the Summer Palace of Beijing, Angkor Wat of Cambodia, and Kiyomizu-dera of Kyoto, Asia is more well known for its natural beauty.

The beaches of the Philippines, the islands of Ha Long Bay, the Himalayas, and the rugged landscape of Japan are some of the most naturally beautiful places on earth. While Europe is much better to visit in the summer, Asia is not seasonal, and any time is a good time to go.

Europe is extremely touristy. I mean this in the sense of packed itineraries, and endless picture-taking of monuments (see “Travellers, Not Tourists” for more on this topic).

In many European destinations, the itinerary consists of sights, sights, and more sights. A lot of these sights are very pleasant, but after a couple weeks they lose their charm.

While this is a bit of an oversimplification on things to do in Europe, Europe’s landscape, climate, and law & order restricts the things that one can do whilst visiting.

While many tourists visit Asia, the excursions are much more exotic and intense.

Boat trips along the Mekong Delta, motorbiking through the Laotian countryside, shooting rocket launchers in Cambodia, and riding elephants in Thailand are some of the things that one can expect to do in Asia.

With less rules, more exotic wildlife, and a much larger contrast from Europe, Asia can guarantee an abundance of wild adventures.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure is by far the biggest difference in this Europe vs Asia battle.  It’s no secret that a majority of Asian countries are significantly more undeveloped than most western ones.

While this does continue to add to the essence of adventure surrounding a backpacking trip through countries in Asia, it is definitely something that deserves to be considered when discussing the topic of Europe vs Asia.

Where Europe excels in it’s infrastructural organization, Asia tends to lag a bit behind in this aspect.  Although Asia is widely considered safe by many standards for travelers, there is a sense of vigilance that is necessary.

Healthcare is a huge factor when deciding on Europe vs Asia for your next travel adventure, and for good reason.

Just as an example, consider the drastic difference of getting sick in Germany vs getting sick in The Philippines.

Pretty scary right?

Another huge difference when it comest to Europe vs Asia is the legal system.  Europe has a much more defined and less inconsistent legal system when compared to Asia.  Such as in Europe, you will not get your hand chopped off for theft, whereas in some Asian countries this is a potential penalty.

Or getting arrested for “minor” drug use in Greece vs getting arrested in Thailand, where technically the maximum death penalty for a first time offense is death by firing squad.

Yikes!!!

Asia’s lack of development can also make things like transportation a tad bit more difficult when compared to the simplicity of Europe.

Simple things like taking your motorbike out to explore the city would make most people’s head spin in Asia. Probably in part due to the lack of street lights at major intersections or optional lane use on major highways, but you know… whatever!

You never really know when you might have no other choice but to use the toilet that is literally… not figuratively “a hole in the floor”.

Restaurants that would be shut down in Europe for cockroach infestation, would thrive in some Southeast Asian countries.

However, don’t let the cockroaches fool you… the food is still amazing!

The bright side of all this? In Asia’s defense, for all that infrastructural development that you’ll find in Europe, you will most definitely be paying significantly extra for it!

Backpacking trips through Asia are unbelievably cheap.

Where I’ve paid as much as 50 euros for a motorbike in Croatia, I’ve paid as little as 100 VND in Vietnam.  You can literally get nice private rooms in Asia for the equivalence of 10 euros a night!

Thanks to the lack of development, Asia is literally a broke backpackers paradise!

Parties

If you do not like clubbing before going to Europe, you better start.

Europe has the best clubs in the entire world. These clubs are packed with open-minded people who are very particular about the music therefore driving its quality up.

The clubs are open all night long, guaranteeing that you will probably not go to sleep before the sunrise (especially in Barcelona).

In some places like Berlin, the clubs are extremely picky, and will deny you for no other reason than the fact that they don’t like the vibe that you bring.

This can be very frustrating and the bouncers are often times dickheads, but it certainly effectively enforces quality control.

In addition to the nightclubs, Europe has some of the most insane spring break type destinations.

Places like Ios in Greece, Ayia Napa in Cyprus, and Magaluf in Spain have the craziest sex-game-filled daytime beach and boat parties that I have ever seen. These places make American spring break destinations look tame!

Now that’s saying a lot!

Many Asian destinations offer a good party scene, especially due to the influx of backpackers.

Nice cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore have solid clubs and bar streets, with extremely lively nightlife.

When I think of partying in Southeast Asia, I think of insanely alcoholic drinks, beach bars with sex games of their own, call girls, and ladyboys.

A good party can almost always be found in Asia, however the scene is not as well established as it is in Europe which is part of the beauty of it.

A majority of European parties are too mainstream and money oriented, sometimes ruining the authenticity and spontaneity of the experience.

However, parties in Asia especially in the South East offer more of a genuine and naturally easy going feel, all while maintaining the same level debauchery and madness that travelers crave. You won’t have to worry about ridiculously long lines, outrageous club entry fees or paying an arm and a leg for a decent drink.

A bucket in Thailand is about 300 THB, and trust us when we say a couple of these things will have you sufficiently lit for the next three nights.

Asia and Europe have two different party scenes, but both are uniquely wild in there own way.  You’re not going to find Ibiza in Asia and you’re not going to find The Full Moon Party in Europe, so for this reason the Europe vs Asia debate has no loser here.

People

Categories

  • Friendliness

There are friendly groups of people in Europe, such as the Greeks, Swedes, and Serbs just to name a few.

These people are helpful, typically have good English language skills, and will include you in their activities.

With this being said, on the whole, Europe isn’t really known extremely positively for its friendly vibes. Many Europeans that I have encountered are quite unfriendly towards foreigners, especially in major cities such as Rome and Paris.

These places have had tourists for a long time, and it is understandable that the locals are tired of this.

The biggest bonus about Europeans is that the women are beautiful! Czech girls, Serbian girls, and Scandinavian girls are complete smokeshows more often than not.

I understand why Donald Trump has married two Eastern European women!

For the most part, Asians are extremely hospitable people. They are very welcoming, and unlike Europeans, seem to be thrilled by the influx of travelers.

Even Asians who cannot speak English very well are pleasant to interact with, as friendliness knows no boundaries.

The Asian people play a large part in creating a positive experience and vibe which is referred to as the “Asian charm” by many travelers. Asia does have beautiful women, however I think that Europe wins in this department.

With this being said, Filipinas are the best looking women in Asia, and are often times smoking hot and extremely friendly (this is one of the reasons that I love the Philippines so much).

Cultural Experience

Categories

  • Culture
  • Food

The final category of our Europe vs Asia discussion comes down to cultural experiences.

Europe has many different nations of people, with many different cultures and cuisines. While it is enjoyable to see and experience these, they are not as vastly diverse as Asian cultures.

Asia, in contrast, is much different. Indians, Southeast Asians, Asian islanders, and east Asian peoples round out the wide variety of cultures seen in the continent.

The food, the religions, the traditions, and the customs are much different than what I have experienced. Ideas of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shintoism are a good counter to the often divisive Abrahamic religions, and are extremely appealing to travelers visiting the region.

Asia is home to some of the best cuisines in the entire world, as it includes Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese food.

European food ranging from Greek Gyros, Swedish Meatballs and Italian Pizza is sinfully delicious and mouthwatering, however much like the rest of western culture a bit mainstream, so you’re less likely to have an exotic dining experience.

Europe vs Asia

Final Score

99

Europe vs Asia?  So, which one is better? Both of these continents are awesome to travel to.

One could very easily travel to these places and create their own “Eurotrip” or “The Beach” experience as I feel like I have.

Not to say that it is exclusively this, but for those who would like to experience spring break on steroids, I would absolutely recommend traveling through Europe.

The journey is much easier, and is more ideal for first time travelers. My personal preference between the two continents is Asia, because I love exploring the unknown, unique adventures, beautiful scenery, and friendly people. I may have left Asia, but my heart certainly didn’t.
