Where Is Kelingking Beach?

Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida Google Maps

Location: Bunga Mekar, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771, Indonesia

Kelingking Beach is located on the West Coast of Nusa Penida. From the main town, it is around a 50-minute motorbike ride and an hour by car.

Other popular attractions located near Kelingking Beach are Crystal Bay, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Peguyangan Waterfall, and Manta Bay.  These attractions are all located on the same side of the island so it is a good idea to try to group some of these into one day’s sightseeing itinerary.

Pro Tip

When planning a trip to Nusa Penida, be sure to spend at least 3-4 days on the island.  Although there is not much in terms of nightlife, the island certainly offers the most to see out of the three Nusa Islands and definitely deserves the extra few nights in order to suitably experience all of its wonders.

How To Get From Kelingking Beach From Bali?

The Nusa islands are located just off the coast of Bali. All three Nusa islands are directly accessible from Bali by way of a short 30-minute ferry.

Transports from Bali to Nusa Penida island can be easily arranged by your hotel or local tour agency including both a transfer to the harbor along with ferry tickets for anywhere between 300k to 400k IDR “Indonesian Rupiah”  depending on your departing location.

It is best to schedule these trips at least a day in advance to avoid the risk of sold-out ferries.

Another option is to ask tour operators in Bali mainland about one-day Nusa Penida tours including Kelingking Beach.

Granted this is not my recommended way of visiting Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida however, those who are on a limited time frame to explore Bali should seriously consider this option.

Pro Tip

Wear flip flops during your transfer because you will often times have to step in water in order to get on the ferry boats.

What Time Should I Visit Kelingking Beach?

kelingking beach nusa penida

Figuring out the ideal time to visit Kelingking Beach is a bit of a Catch-22.

Arriving at Kelingking Beach before 10 a.m will help you avoid the hordes of imminent tourists, however, by arriving this early you will also have to wait for the sun to entirely hit the beach, putting a bit of a shadowy damper on your photography.

On the other hand, arriving after 10 a.m will definitely provide the best lighting for your photos with a fully illuminated Kelingking Beach, however, you will have to fight around hundreds of overzealous tourists in order to achieve that perfect shot for the ‘Gram.

Hiking Down To Kelingking Beach?

best things to do in southeast asia _ kelingking beachNow for the fun part…

To be on such a beautiful beach comes with a price.

The hike down to Kelingking Beach isn’t exactly a walk in the park, so you’ll definitely want to bring a solid pair of sneakers on this particular beach trip.

Aleader Waterproof Shoes

Waterproof shoes are absolutely  essential for adventures like Kelingking Beach. This pair of lightweight, waterproof sneakers made by Aleader are the perfect shoe to protect your feet during the hike down and at the same time won’t ruin once you finally arrive on the beach.

The trek down from the viewpoint to the beach is anything but laidback as you proceed to climb down several hundred meters of makeshift stairs consisting of a bunch of ropes and sticks sketchily fastened to the limestone boulders on the edge of the Kelingking sea cliff.

Nevertheless, to make matters worse, add in the fact that there are clusters of other travelers trying to do the exact same thing.

Consequently, the hike down takes around an hour to complete as you will be forced to squeeze and finesse your way past others both going up and down the narrowest of pathways hanging from the side of one of the most daunting cliffs, you will ever see.

Don’t fret though, as it is an experience you won’t soon forget and as long as you are in no rush, you will make it down quite alright.

Pro Tip
Just be sure to take a good pair of shoes with you and take your time on the hike down and you will make it up and down with no scrapes and bruises.

Final Thoughts

Kelingking Beach was literally my most anticipated attraction during my trip to Bali and trust me when I say it did not disappoint.

As one of the top two most visually stunning beaches I have ever had the pleasure of visiting, second to only that of Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, Kelingking Beach is guaranteed to take your breath away from the moment you lay eyes on this little pocket of magnificence.

The hike down is worth every bump, scratch, and bruise once you reach the luminous blue crystal-clear sea, enhanced by the powdery white-sanded cove of Kelingking Bay.

The time spent on this stunning beach is guaranteed to be nothing short of unforgettable.
