La Piedra del Peñol Guatape

{Where To Find The Best View In Colombia}

Towering above the rolling foothills of Guatape lies the soaring monument of La Piedra del Peñol also known as “The Big Rock.”

Coined by many Colombian locals as the “The Best View In The World” it’s not hard to see how La Piedra del Peñol gained its fame.

At its highest point on the south side of “The Rock”, La Piedra stands at a whopping 721 feet tall providing anyone who dares to climb it unbeatable panoramic views over all of Guatape.

On one side you will witness the mesmerizing landscape of Guatape, while on the other you see the equally as beautiful lands of Peñol.

With views as flawless as this, you’d be foolish to miss out on this incredible Guatape day trip!

Pro Tip
Interestingly enough, there is a bit of a disagreement between Guatape and Penol, as to which town actually claims La Piedra. A disagreement that even involves a bit of spray paint and an angry mob, but more on that part later.

The peak can be accessed via an exhausting hike up the 650 stairs that zigzag up the middle of the narrow crack that scales this particular side of the rock.

Aside from this one massive fissure, La Piedra is surprisingly completely smooth which adds to its mystifying appearance.

However, sitting at an astounding 7005 ft above sea level, even the most experienced hikers might find themselves a bit more winded than normal during this climb thanks to the lack of oxygen found at this altitude.

Often times we found ourselves out of breath from even climbing just a few stairs and legitimately struggling to maintain a conversation.

However, don’t let this in any way deter you, as the view from the top is well worth the climb and you will experience one of the most unforgettable views in all of Colombia.

With that being said, the climb up only takes around 15-20 minutes for those in decent shape.

Once you reach the top of La Piedra, most travelers will take several moments to catch their breath and cool down from the brief but exhausting climb up.

Although you will most definitely break a sweat, the weather in Guatape is rather chilled so it won’t take long before you cool off from the refreshing breeze atop La Piedra.

Most travelers who take this number one Guatape day trip typically spend around an hour atop La Piedra admiring one of the most Instagrammable Places In Colombia.

The view from atop La Piedra del Peñol is genuinely astounding and is hands down one of the most amazing in all of Colombia.

Leading a majority of locals to believe it is justifiably “The Best View In The World” as you will notice written on several signs throughout the area.

How Much Is The Entrance Fee To Visit La Piedra?

The entrance fee for La Piedra is only 18,000 COP which is approximately only 6 USD.

A bargain as far as I’m concerned to see this natural wonder.

Once you purchase your ticket you will then proceed up about 15 stairs before showing it to the guard at the checkpoint.

After clearing this checkpoint, you are free to hike La Piedra del Peñol.

Pro Tip
Although they do not let you bring outside food past this checkpoint, there are several stores located at the summit serving a variety of snacks and beverages.

Where is La Piedra del Peñol?

la piedra view from above

Contrary to popular belief La Piedra del Peñol is technically not located in the town of Guatape.

It is actually located in the small town of El Peñol, which is located right next to Guatape.

Although it might not seem like a big deal, there is quite a heated dispute between over which town actually has the rights to claim La Piedra del Peñol as their own.

The dispute even once became so intense that locals of Guatape actually attempted to spray paint the name “Guatape” on the side of La Piedra in order to claim it.

Unsurprisingly it did not take long before the residents of El Peñol, took notice and assembled a large mob to stop it.

However, not before the massive G and part of the U were painted on the side of “The Rock” which can still be seen today.

How To Get From Medellin To Guatape?

La Piedra sunset views

A trip from Medellin to Guatape only takes about two hours and has several different reliable means of transportation.

The most common way to visit Guatape from Medellin is to take the bus from terminal Norte.

Medellin to Guatape by Bus

Terminal Norte is located a bit on the outskirts of Medellin and quite far from the El Poblado neighborhood which is the most common place for backpackers stay in the city.

Although you can make the effort of reaching Terminal Norte via the metro which might save you a few coins, I recommend catching a taxi or an Uber, which should cost no more than 20,000 COP which is approximately $7 USD.

Once you reach Terminal Norte head to booth 9-14 on the lower level to book tickets to Guatape town which will only cost 15,000 COP for a one way.

Medellin to Guatape by bus takes approximately 2 hours depending on the number of stops along the way.

Medellin To Guatape By Taxi (Recommended Option)

This is probably the first and last time taking a taxi is actually more cost effective than taking a taxi for a long-distance journey, so you better take advantage of this.

However, be aware you won’t be able to just hail a taxi off the street or order an Uber online otherwise you will be charged a substantial fare to travel to Guatape.

Instead, follow the same directions above on how to take the bus to Guatape from Medellin, and once you are at Gates 9-14 at Terminal Norte, just ask the ticket office about the taxi option.

The taxi option will only cost you 18,000 COP which is just 3000 COP more than the bus.

However, by taking a taxi from Terminal Norte, it will actually get you there forty minutes faster than the bus.

Although you will have to share the taxi with up to three other riders depending on how many other people you are traveling with, I much prefer this method as opposed to squeezing onto a crowded bus.

Guatape Day Trip From Medellin

Although I highly recommend visiting Guatape for at least one night, if you want to simply take a Guatape day trip with just enough time to see La Piedra del Peñol then you could easily take a Guatape day trip from Medellin.

Most tours will simply transport you from Medellin to Guatape by tour bus and take you to explore La Piedra and Guatape town with lunch included for around 80,000 to 130,000 COP.

The Best Guatape Tour From Medellin

pablo escobar mansion

Even though we stayed for the night, the best Guatape tour from Medellin that I managed to find also included some epic games of paintball at Pablo Escobar’s Guatape Mansion.

The tour is priced at around 175,000 COP which is approximately $55 USD but includes:

  • Transport to and from Guatape
  • 4 games of paintball at Pablo Escobar’s Mansion
  • Pablo Escobar Mansion Tour
  • Lunch
  • Boat tour across the lake
  • Tour of La Piedra del Peñol
  • Tour of Guatape Town

This tour and a majority of others can be book booked from either your hostel or any one of the tour agencies located in the El Poblado neighborhood of Medellin.

It’s easily the best Guatape day trip you can take from Medellin!

Pro Tip
If you happen to come across Happy Buddha Hostel in Guatape while scrolling through the Hostelworld accommodation options, do yourself a favor and DO NOT stay there.

During our brief stint at Happy Buddha Guatape, we experienced a range of issues including bed bugs that the hostel knew about and had already scheduled fumigation while they had guests at the hostel.

Aside from this we also experienced sheets and towels with blood on them, used band-aids found in our bed, complete incompetence whether trying to reserve a simple tour, serve drinks, or even cook a meal.

Hands down the worst hostel I have ever stayed at.

Consider yourself warned!
