Where Is Maya Bay?

Maya Bay is located in the Andman Sea just off the coast of one of Thailand’s most frequented islands called Koh Phi Phi.

How To Get To Koh Phi Phi?

Although not directly accessible by airplane, Koh Phi Phi is reachable from all parts of Thailand, however transportation will vary in price according to your location.

Most Popular Departing Locations

Head to the pier or local travel agency and book a 2-hour ferry for around 500 baht.

If you are departing from Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok, then you have the option to either fly or organize a shuttle/ferry transfer.

Flight – Flying is my preferred method of transport when departing from Bangkok.  For around 700 baht (roughly $21 USD) you can easily book a flight to Phuket International Airport (Koh Phi Phi does not have an airport).  From there, order a taxi outside the airport to ferry port.   Finally catch a two-hour ferry for around 500 baht from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi.

If you don’t feel comfortable organizing transports yourself, then you can easily book your trip through a travel agency found all through out Bangkok.  They will organize all flights, transports and ferries for you ahead of time and depending on your haggle skills, you could save quite a bit of money.

Bus/Ferry – Head to your nearest travel agency and you can easily organize a bus and ferry transfer to Koh Phi Phi for around 700 baht.  However, be aware it is an exhausting 16 hour journey!

Gulf Of Thailand (Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, Koh Tao)

If you are departing from any of the islands in the Gulf of Thailand, then your best option is to organize a bus/ferry.

Bus/Ferry – Head to your nearest travel agency and you can easily organize a bus and ferry transfer to Koh Phi Phi for around 900 baht.

When To Visit Maya Bay?

If you want to experience the raw and untouched splendor of Maya Bay without hundreds of other speed and longtail boats bringing figuratively half of the current tourist population in Thailand on board with them, then you’d best arrive sometime early in the morning; preferably just after sunrise.

The lofty title as Thailand’s most sought-after attraction, does come with a bit of a hefty price.

At any given moment during the day there could be several dozen boats all loaded with hundreds of eager tourists waiting for their moment to experience the delicacy that is Maya Bay.

Long story short… get here early or accept the consequences.

As far as the best time of year to visit Maya Bay, it is best to visit sometime during the high season between the months of November and April.

Normally I would recommend visiting an attraction of this magnitude outside the high season for obvious reasons, however as of 2018, Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) have issued a “complete shutdown” to all traffic towards Maya Bay as part of a four-month rejuvenation program.

This would be fine and dandy as long as it is only a one-time thing.  However, as a result of the amount of traffic Maya Bay experiences on a daily basis, there is always the potential for this to become a yearly or at the very least biennial occurrence.

How To Get To Maya Bay?

There are several different methods of transportation to Maya Bay.

Option A (Personal Recommendation)

Visit the wonderfully beautiful Koh Phi Phi for few days and organize a tour from here to Maya Bay.

You have several boating options of taking either

  • Private Boat (2000 baht total)
  • Group Tour (400 baht per person)
  • Blanco’s Party Boat with all you can drink beer (2000 baht per person)

Guess which one we chose…

Pro Tip

Most tours have Monkey Beach and Pileh Lagoon included in the price as well so make sure that the tour you book incorporates these attractions as well.

Option B (Only If Time Is A Factor)

Book a day tour of Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi and surrounding attractions from Ao Nang or Phuket for around 600 baht.

What To Do In Maya Bay?

The two most popular activities to do while at Maya Bay are snorkeling and photography.

It’s not hard to imagine why a lagoon iconic for its immaculately transparent emerald blue water boasting seemingly endless amounts of exotic marine life would be good place to snorkel.

Not to mention as one of the most visually stunning destinations in Thailand, Maya Bay is guaranteed to leave any travel photographer or Instagrammer with a seemingly endless array of picture perfect snapshots.

Pro Tip

Although you might feel tempted to fly your drone from the shores of Maya Bay, it is strictly forbidden and could result in a massive fine.

However, if you absolutely must fly your drone, you might want to attempt doing so whilst aboard your boat before you actually enter the Maya Bay, which is more or less frowned upon than forbidden (at least I think… )
