HOW TO GET TO MINCA FROM SANTA MARTA

minca santa marta bus

Getting to Minca from Santa Marta is one of the easiest and quickest journeys you’ll take in all of Colombia.

The only way to get there is by road, so you can either take a bus or a taxi.

BUS TO MINCA FROM SANTA MARTA

The cheapest way to get to Minca from Santa Marta is to take the bus.

The bus takes about 1 hour to get to Minca from Santa Marta!

You must take the bus from the main bus station in Santa Marta, located on the corner of Calle 11 & Carrera 9.

Once you’re there, you’ll hear the bus driver yelling out “Bus To Minca” and low and behold, that’s the bus you need to get on.

The buses leave the station quite often so don’t worry about following any type of schedule.

How To Get To Minca From Santa Marta Colombia

At some point throughout your journey to Minca the ticket man will come up to everyone and ask for up to COP 10,000 depending on how far they’re going.

Going to Minca from Santa Marta will cost you COP 8,000 (February 2019).

TAXI

If you don’t feel like squishing onto a little bus for an hour, or if you are a group of 4, maybe you’d prefer to get your own taxi to Minca.

The taxi only takes 40 minutes instead of 1 hour on the bus.

The price depends on the negotiation between you and the taxi driver, but it should cost no more than COP 80,000.

It’s a lot pricier than the bus, especially to only be saving 20 minutes, however, you will be comfortable the entire way there.

HOW TO GET TO CASA ELEMENTO FROM MINCA

road from minca to casa elemento

If you’re staying at Casa Elemento in Minca Santa Marta (which we highly recommend), there is further transportation you will need to take once you get to Minca from Santa Marta.

Getting to Casa Elemento from Minca takes another 30-40 minutes on a bumpy, uphill, dirt road.

Lots of people wonder how to get to Casa Elemento once they get to Minca, and the only way to get there is either by motorbike, by jeep, or by foot.

Some people actually choose to hike to Casa Elemento, which take 2-3 hours.

But it’s free!

Sounds like hell to me.

I opted to take a motorbike, which cost COP 20,000, which was well worth it for me especially when passing by all the fatigued hikers along the way.

In saying this, it’s only a motorbike.

So if you don’t need to take all your luggage with you, then don’t.

Try to leave your big bags in Santa Marta and only take what you’ll need with you because traveling uphill on a bumpy dirt road for 40 minutes is much harder when you have a giant, heavy backpack on your back.

If you wish to take a Jeep from Minca to Casa Elemento, you will need to organize this with the hostel prior to arriving so they know when to pick you up!

HOW LONG TO STAY IN MINCA SANTA MARTA

casa elemento minca colombia

I would recommend staying in Minca for no more than 2-3 days.

It’s mostly for relaxing, and in terms of things to do then you can walk to some waterfalls or viewpoints, but one of the best things to do in Minca, in my opinion, is to just be in the peacefulness of nature and get into full relaxation mode.

2 nights in Minca Santa Marta would be the perfect amount of time to unwind and recover after a heavy weekend partying in Santa Marta or in other parts of Colombia.

Although none of these hostels are actually located in Minca Town, they are nestled deeper within the jungle of the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges about 30-40 minutes from the main town and they do require a motorbike, jeep, or a hike to get to.

Though not located directly in town, waking up to the sounds of nature is an experience you won’t forget!

CASA ELEMENTO

Obviously by now, you can guess that Casa Elemento is our preferred accommodation while staying in Minca Santa Marta.

There’s just something about laying in those hammocks all day without WiFi, and the level of chill at this hostel is simply unbeatable.

Also, the food they cook for you tastes just like Mama made it, and it’s the best hostel food I’ve ever had.

Pro Tip
You will most likely have to book Casa Elemento in advance because it sells out quick!

If Casa Elemento happens to be booked out, don’t worry – there’s always a Plan B.

It doesn’t have a hammock to lay on all day, however, the view from Casa Loma is exquisite!

2. FINCA LA VICTORIA COFFEE TOUR

We all know that Colombia is famous for their coffee, so taking a coffee tour while you’re there would be appropriate!

Finca La Victoria is one of the most famous coffee farms in Northern Colombia so this would be a good place to start!

During the tour you will learn about the process of coffee making from picking the beans to having them on the supermarket shelf.

The tour costs COP 10,000 including a cup of coffee and the tour lasts for around 1 hour!
