The Thailand Full Moon Party Dates 2019 {Everything You Need To Know!}

It’s a bit of an understatement to say that a trip to Thailand is dreadfully incomplete without experiencing the most infamous and outrageous beach party in the world.

Like night and day, the once in a lifetime event of the Full Moon Party completely transforms Haad Rin Beach into an uninhibited hedonistic playground for cultural strangers around the globe to join in on the infectious vibes as they play into the evolving madness.

As the undisputed king of everything wild in Thailand, The Full Moon Party is guaranteed to be a night you will never forget.

What To Expect At The Thailand Full Moon Party?

full moon party thailand dates

Thanks to its world-renowned infamous reputation as the largest and most insane beach party on the planet, Haad Rin Beach will attract anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 partygoers at a time for any given Full Moon Party event.

The days before the event are filled with raw anticipation as more and more tourists arrive to Koh Phangan island each day.

So, to help ease all of the excitement, the island dishes out a steady stream of featured events ranging from waterfall, pool and jungle parties, each wilder than the next.

By the time the big day finally approaches, the atmosphere on the island is nearly ready to explode.

You will notice locals setting up their bucket stands ready to cash in on the big night. Partygoers doing some last-minute shopping for face paint, flamboyantly vibrant outfits, along with enough alcohol to kill a building.

At the party itself, you can expect everything from, body painting, binge drinking, fire festivities (limbo and jump rope), extremely promiscuous behavior, an assortment of party favors and the occasional ambulance or two.

The Full Moon festivities literally run from 8 pm until around 11 am the next day so you better come correct if you’re going to be a “Full Moon Warrior” and make it through it entirely.

Major bonus points if you are somehow still awake and are freakishly able to attend the after party the following morning.

The full moon party festival occurs once every month on the dates listed below.

However, we recommend you arrive at least several days ahead of time to experience the lead-up events of the various waterfall, pool and jungle parties.

The price of the featured parties is 1000 TBH per ticket but in spite of that, there are also free parties on the beach each night as an alternative.

I personally prefer the music, atmosphere, and price of the beach parties (free) but, if you’re into heavy techno and trans music then you might want to give the featured parties a go.

How Much Does The Full Moon Party Cost?

Full Moon Party Tickets Price

The Full Moon Party tickets are 100 TBH (about $3 USD).

However, if your accommodation is located in the Haad Rin on the same side as the Full Moon Party, then you are not required to pay a fee to enter.

Likewise, if you arrive to the event before 7 p.m when the ticket booths are set up, then you will not be required to pay a fee either.

Full Moon Party Accommodation Price

Although the Full Moon Party tickets price is quite inexpensive the rates of accommodation do tend to quickly rise around the week of the event so, it is advised to book a hotel well in advance.

Not to mention the availability of rooms is at a minimum making prices rise even more.

Where Is The Full Moon Party?

koh phangan thailand full moon party

Thailand’s Full Moon Party is located on the notorious party island of Koh PhanganKoh Phangan is located just 12km north from the tourist hotspot of Koh Samui and 45km from the popular diving paradise of Koh Tao.

The actual event of the Full Moon Party is located in a small town called Haad Rin located on the southernmost tip of Koh Phangan.

The town of Haad Rin is divided into two parts.

Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach – Which is responsible for the islands wild party reputation as well as the location of the Full Moon Party.

Haad Rin Noi (Sunset Beach) – Which is known as the tamer and more relaxed part of Haad Rin.

How To Get To The Full Moon Party?

The island of Koh Phangan has no airport so all of its traffic relies on ferry transportation from Koh Samui island and Surat Thani (the mainland).

How To Reach Koh Phangan From Koh Samui

Unlike the island of Koh Phangan, Koh Samui does have an airport. Quite possibly because on Samui island they weren’t piss drunk every partying til sunrise… but who knows for sure?

Flights can be purchased from Bangkok for around $150 USD for a one-way ticket to Koh Samui.  Upon arrival you can then easily book a ferry to Koh Phangan for around 250THB (equals about $8USD.)

Pro Tip

An assemblage of Taxi’s will be waiting outside the airport so you will be able find transportation with ease.

How To Reach Koh Phangan From Surat Thani (Cheaper Option)

Flights from Bangkok to Surat Thani are around $13 USD for a one-way ticket!

From there you can easily book a ferry to Koh Phangan for around 330 TBH.

Pro Tip

An assemblage of Taxi’s will be waiting outside the airport so you will be able find transportation with ease.

Where To Stay For The Full Moon Party?

You have the option to either stay on Koh Phangan or one of the surrounding islands of Koh Tao or Koh Samui when searching for accommodation for the party.

Koh Phangan (Recommended)

If you decide to stay on Koh Phangan for the event (wise decision) I highly recommend you follow up such a wise decision with another one and stay in the town of Haad Rin where the event is located.

From there you have the choice to either stay in Haad Rin Nok which is party side of the town where the party is located or Haad Rin Noi also know as the quiet side of town.

It’s almost arbitrary which one you choose seeing as they are located roughly a 10 minute walk from each other but, if you plan on running completely wild during your time on Koh Phangan and don’t mind loud noise then I recommend Haad Rin Nok.

If you plan on staying in Haad Rin Nok.

If You Choose To Stay On Koh Samui or Koh Tao

If you choose to stay on Koh Samui or Koh Tao there are many one day/night tours that take you to Koh Phangnan the evening of The Full Moon Party and then pick you up the morning after.

If you feel like partying in Koh Phangan anything more than a day is too much for you but, still want to experience the Full Moon Party then I highly recommend this option.

Pro Tip

Even for those not interested in Koh Phangan nightlife there is still plenty of beautiful places to be explored.

What To Look Out For?

Fake Alcohol

This is the most important thing to be on the lookout for not just at the Full Moon Party but, anywhere in Southeast Asia.  Methanol poisoning runs rampant through Southeast Asia not because the bar staff intentionally to harm you but, simply because they are attempting to save money.  However, the effects are all the same.

You won’t be able to see, taste or smell the difference but even a small amount of methanol can do plenty of damage.

The best way to avoid fake alcohol is to buy a majority of your liquor from the many 7-11’s located in Haad Rin.

However, chances are you will at some point during the night purchase a bucket from one of the hundreds of bucket stands located throughout Haad Rin.

Chances are you will be just fine, however in the off chance you begin experiencing a severe headache, blurry vision, trembling, difficulty breathing or any other unusual symptoms, don’t assume it’s just a hangover.

Head to the hospital and go get it checked out.

For what it’s worth that’s why you have travel insurance right?

During the several weeks, we spent on Haad Rin we always got our buckets from a lovely kindhearted hearted lady named Mimi.  (You will see her bucket stand located on Haad Rin beach between Cactus Bar and Drop In Bar)

We decided it was better to buy our buckets from a familiar face as oppose to all the random unknown bucket stands located around Haad Rin.

Glass On The Beach

At a beach party as wild as this, it comes as no surprise that there might be a couple broken bottles and shattered glass somewhere on the beach.  Its recommended to wear some type of footwear throughout the night to prevent possibly stepping on glass.

The Slide

full moon party 2019 slide

Somewhere along the extensive history of the Full Moon Party some genius (and I use this term loosely) decided it was a good idea to put a massive slide in the middle of all the drunken chaos for every inebriated fool to attempt to slide down.

Spoiler Alert: It was not a great idea…

thailand full moon party 2019

In the three Full Moon Parties that I have attended, this single slide or may I say “deathtrap” has brought about more gruesome injuries and hospital rides than I care to remember.

Whether it’s people diving down headfirst and inevitably face planting into the sand or just a casual but, all too common leg break this slide should not be taken lightly.

Skinny Dipping

Typically I am a huge advocate of skinny dipping, however, I wouldn’t exactly recommend it at this particular beach party.  For the simple fact that with 30,000 highly intoxicated party animals binge drinking the night away on a beach with no inhibitions or bathrooms in sight, take one guess what inescapably becomes the entire beaches public bathroom?

Catch my drift…

If that wasn’t enough of a deterrent, then maybe the more than likely chance of getting robbed is.  As if taking a skinny-dip in piss filled waters wasn’t enough punishment for unsuspecting first-time partygoers, chances are your wallet, phone, and even clothes will not be where you left them when you return.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
