9 Things To Do In Nusa Penida Travel Guide {The Ultimate 2018 Itinerary}

As the largest and most exotic of the three Nusa islands, Nusa Penida is any travel photographer’s dream destination.

The Nusa Penida beaches are hands down the best beaches in Bali and are guaranteed to impress even the most cultured of backpackers.

Famed for its dramatic seascapes, remarkable rock formations and utterly breathtaking beaches, Nusa Penida offers a rare kind of adventure that you will most certainly never forget.

How to Get To Nusa Penida From Bali

nusa penida from bali map

Located just a 30-minute boat ride off the eastern shores of Bali, for many travelers Nusa Penida will in fact prove to be the highlight of their entire Bali adventure.

Transports can be easily arranged by your hotel or local tour agency including both a transfer to the harbor along with ferry tickets for anywhere between 300k to 400k IDR “Indonesian Rupiah” depending on your departing location.

It is best to schedule these trips at least a day in advance to avoid the risk of sold out ferries.

Pro Tip

Wear flip flops during your transfer because you will often times have to step in water in order to reach the ferry boats.

How Long Should I Stay On Nusa Penida?

kelingking beach nusa penida drone

Although a majority of people decide to stay and book their Nusa Penida tours from Nusa Lembongan because the island is a bit more developed, I personally recommend actually staying on Nusa Penida for at least 3-4 days.

It is quite massive in scale and thanks to its exorbitant amount of “broken roads” navigating all of the best things things to do in Nusa Penida can prove to be such a demanding task, that you will be thankful for the extra time spent on the island.

Where To Stay In Nusa Penida?

Green Beach Inn is a quaint little seaside hotel offering all the key elements to a wonderfully pleasant Nusa Penida accomodation.

The hotel is located around 45 minutes from both of the primary Nusa Penida points of interests; Kelingking and Atuh Beach.

Private shuttles and motorbike rentals can also be organized from the hotel at very affordable rates.

What We Loved

  • Large comfortable bed
  • Hot shower
  • Located just a few minutes outside of town by motorbike.
  • Free daily breakfast that will serve your food according to your preference and schedule.
  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Excellent WiFi connection from room

What We Didn’t Love

  • By foot restaurants and other stores are a tad bit out of the way.

Nusa Penida Itinerary

Things To Do In Nusa Penida – Day 1

After arriving to the port sometime around 14:00 completely famished and a quite exhausted from all of our sightseeing adventures in Bali, the first thing on our mind was food.

So, we organized transport from the pier to our accommodation for around 75,000 IDR (Indonesian Rupiah) and proceeded to check into our room at Green Beach Inn.  From there we organized motor bike rentals for around 50,000 IDR per day and proceeded to head into town to grab a quick bite to eat before attempting to begin our first day of Nusa Penida sightseeing adventures.

However, by time all of this was completed, it was already 15:45 not leaving us much time for sightseeing before sunset.

So, with this in mind instead of trying to squeeze our first set of sightseeing attractions into just a 2-hour time frame, we decided to simply head down to Crystal Bay Beach for some much-needed rest and relaxation before calling it an early night to catch up on some much needed sleep.

Pro Tip

If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, instead of opting to relax at Crystal Bay Beach for the remainder of the day, you could always make the trip to Kelingking Beach for sunset.

Even though you will be right back here early the next morning, the sunset panoramas are absolutely marvelous and very much worth an extra visit.

Things To Do In Nusa Penida – Day 2

After a solid night’s sleep, it’s time for the second day of Nusa Penida adventures, including Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach and Peguyangan Waterfall.

The closest attraction to the main town is Kelingking Beach located about 50 minutes away by motorbike with the furthest attraction being Peguyangan Waterfall located about 45 minutes away by motorbike.

There is quite a bit of broken road around this part of the island.  However, if you are an experienced motorbike rider, it shouldn’t be anything you can’t handle.

Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Beach)

Location: Bunga Mekar, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771, Indonesia

Chances are anyone planning a visit to Nusa Penida already has Kelingking Beach well on their radar and will literally be bouncing of the walls with anticipation to witness this spectacle the moment they step foot on the island.

So, in order to help ease all of that apprehension, I’d recommend getting this particular item crossed of your Bali Bucket List as soon as possible.

As one of the most Instagrammable Places In Bali, Kelingking Beach is truly a sight you will need to see to believe.

Boasting unfathomably crystal clear blue waters, powdery white sands and a superlative seascape that will leave you unable to catch your breath, rest assured Kelingking Beach will be one of the most unforgettable beaches you will ever lay your eyes on.

As one of the main Nusa Penida points of interest be sure to plan at least several hours here, providing yourself enough time to experience the beauty of Kelingking Beach from both above and below.

Pro Tip

If you choose to take your own motorbike the parking fee this attraction is only 10,000 IDR, which equates to roughly $1 USD.

Be aware that in order to swim in those alluringly aqua blue two toned waters you witnessed from above, you will have to hike down the freakishly steep sea cliff of Kelingking.

This can take anywhere up to two hours to make the round-trip up and down so be sure to plan your day accordingly.

Broken Beach

Location: Bunga Mekar, Nusapenida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771, Indonesia

Broken Beach is another iconic photo spot found on Nusa Penida that you definitely will not want to miss.

The distinguishable landmark of the mountainous archway, found on the western coast of Nusa Penida is an excellent location to capture some awesome photography and experience the amazing panoramic views of the island.

If you choose to take your own motorbike the parking fee this attraction is only 10,000 IDR, which equates to roughly $1 USD.

Pro Tip

Broken Beach is also located just a 5-minute walk from another popular attraction named Angel’s Billabong.  Though Angel’s Billabong didn’t exactly live up to the hype for me, it’s still a good idea to see it with your own eyes, so you can be the judge.

Peguyangan Waterfall

Location: Nusa Penida, Batukandik, Nusapenida, Kabupaten Klungkung, Bali 80771, Indonesia

As one of the least advertised attractions on our list of 9 Can’t Miss Things To Do In Nusa Penida, Peguyangan waterfall is also one of the most unique lures on the island.

Flaunting the iconic views of the remarkable plunging cliffs of Nusa Penida, a journey down the exhaustingly steep blue stairs will eventually reveal a sacred temple along with the Peguyang waterfall that you came all this way to see.

Although the Peguyang waterfall and sacred temple are quite impressive in their own right, the unparalleled views of the islands dramatic sea cliffs will indubitably steal the show.

If you choose to take your own motorbike the parking fee this attraction is only 5,000 IDR, which equates to roughly $.50 USD.

Pro Tip

Be aware that both men and woman are required to wear sarongs on the way down, however if you don’t remember to bring one, they are available for rent for 10,000 IDR.

Things To Do In Nusa Penida – Day 3

For your third day of Nusa Penida adventures, you will be journeying to the south eastern side of the island exploring Rumah Pohon Tree House, Thousand Island Viewpoint, Suwehan Beach and finally Atuh Beach.

The closest attraction to the main town is Atuh Beach located about 45 minutes away by motorbike with the furthest attraction being Suwehan Beach located about 55 minutes away by motorbike.

However, be aware the broken roads for this particular part of the island are much worse than western side around Kelingking Beach.

So, if you’ve been debating on whether or not to take a private car, out of all your days spent on Nusa Penida today would be that day.

Rumah Pohon Tree House & Thousand Island View Point

Location: Pejukutan, Nusapenida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771, Indonesia

Conveniently located just a short two-minute walk from each other, the “Insta-Famous” Rumah Pohon Tree House and Thousand Island View Point are two of the most popular attractions on the island.

Views from both locations are absolutely stunning and are guaranteed to be one of the most iconic photo locations of your trip.

If you’re interested in capturing that iconic Instagram shot of the Rumah Pohon Tree House and Thousand Island View Point, it is best to do these two attractions first thing in the morning, before they become littered with likeminded tourists all simultaneously struggling to do the same thing.

Rumah Pohon Treehouse And Thousand Islands Viewpoint

Tour shuttles don’t typically begin arriving until around 10 a.m therefore arriving any time before then should be sufficient.

If you choose to take your own motorbike the parking fee for both of these attractions is only 10,000 IDR, which equates to roughly $1 USD.

Pro Tip

Located atop the hill before you walk down is a little Warung offering local cuisines, snacks and drinks.

Suwehan Beach

Location: Tanglad, Nusapenida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771, Indonesia

As the most inaccessible and subsequently isolated beach on our list of 9 Can’t Miss Things To Do In Nusa Penida, the untouched splendor of Suwehan Beach is nothing short of magnificent, that will unquestionably leave you quite sore yet utterly astounded at the same time.

The path to Suwehan Beach definitely redefines the term “broken road”.

Often times I found myself wondering whether we were even heading to a beach at all or had we just gone straight off-roading for the day.

As if this is not enough, the treacherous ride to Suwehan is then followed up with an exceedingly steep hike down that is only topped by the exhausting trek back up.

However, with all that being said, Suwehan Beach was one of the most distinguishable and secluded Nusa Penida beaches, definitely making all the extra effort worth it.

Atuh Beach

Location: Pejukutan, Nusapenida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771, Indonesia

After yet another steep hike down to your final attraction of the day, you will be handsomely rewarded with the relaxing and chilled out vibes of Atuh Beach.

The hike down the stairs only takes around 15 minutes but, it is actually quite steep which you will quickly realize on your way back up.

Depending on the tide you will get two drastically different views of Atuh Beach.  During low tide the entire shoreline disappears and reveals all the exposed rocks on the beach floor.

Subsequently, if you visit during the hide tide you might be able to experience some cliff jumping from the 10-meter peak of the distant arch formation that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to do during low tide.

Pro Tip

Although we were informed that people have jumped from the arch in the past, locals strongly advised against it stating it was quite unsafe.

On account of the rough seas and crashing waves during our visit to Atuh Beach, we were unfortunately not able to test this out for ourselves, although possibly preventing us a future emergency room visit.

Unlike the other beaches on this list Atuh Beach offers an assortment of lounge options and beachside restaurants accompanied with some bumping tunes that you can vibe out to for the remainder of the day.

Things To Do In Nusa Penida – Day 4

This will  be your last morning on Nusa Penida before catching a short thirty-minute ferry to Nusa Lembongan.

This will also be the earliest you will have to wake up out of all your days on Nusa Penida, so make sure to get a good amount of rest the night before.

The only point of interest is Crystal Bay Beach which is located about 35 minutes outside the main town, where you will be departing for your Manta Snorkeling trip.

Swimming With The Mantas at Manta Point

Location:  Batukandik, Nusapenida, Denpasar City, Bali 80771, Indonesia

The wonders of swimming alongside these elusive and ever so gracefully creatures will never cease to amaze me.

Although Mantas can be found all throughout the waters of Indonesia, Nusa Penida island in particular is one of the only places that offers the unique opportunity of actually being able to swim alongside these majestic creatures.

We recommend taking a tour from Crystal Bay Beach located on the west side of the island about 40 minutes from the main town sometime early in the morning.

You know what they say, “early bird gets the worm” and the same goes for swimming with Mantas.

Therefore, the best time to swim with Manta Rays is just after sunrise when the waves are not particularly rough and all typhoon like.

Manta Point Nusa Penida Thumbnaill

Rough seas create difficult swimming conditions for the Mantas consequentially forcing them to dive deeper and further out of view for a simple snorkel.

Not to mention if the waves are too rough a majority of boating trips will be canceled as a result anyways.

Furthermore, arriving earlier in the morning allows you to avoid the influx of tourists who inevitably manage to scare off the Mantas and ruin the authenticity of the experience all together.

If you have even the slightest fascination with Manta Rays then this is one Bali experience that you will be sure to want to wake up early for.

Crystal Bay Beach

Location: Sakti Village, West Coast, Nusa Penida Island

If you decide to book your Manta Ray tour with the guys alongside Crystal Bay Beach (which we highly recommend) than this will be inevitably be your final stop of the trip making this the perfect opportunity for some rest and relaxation before catching a ferry to Nusa Lembongan.

Crystal Bay Beach is a 200-meter long charmingly quaint and secluded cove found on the west coast of Nusa Penida.

Unlike a majority of other attractions on Nusa Penida, Crystal Bay is surprisingly accessible by motor bike considering the vast amount of Broken Road found elsewhere on the island.
