Where Is Tiu Kelep Waterfall?
Tiu Kelep Waterfall is located at the foot of Mount Rinjani in an area called Senaru in the North of Lombok, Indonesia.
It’s about a 2-hour drive from the town of Senggigi or just over 3 hours from Kuta Lombok.
How To Get To Tiu Kelep Waterfall?
Once you arrive at the entrance, you’ll pay an entrance fee of about 10,000 IDR (Indonesian Rupiah) which is equal to about $.70 USD.
It takes around 45 minutes to reach Tiu Kelep Waterfall, but there’s a little surprise for you along the way. About 10 minutes into your hike, you’ll find another pretty little waterfall called Sendang Gile!
Sendang Gile Waterfall is quite simple to find, just follow the path for 10 minutes and you’ll be greeted with the waterfall and some vendors selling fried banana (which we can never say no to).
Allow another 35 minutes to get from Sendang Gile to Tiu Kelep Waterfall. It’s a little bit more difficult to find the second Lombok Waterfall and requires you to cross the river and manoeuvre your way around the rocks.
If this sounds like its too much effort for a waterfall, trust us when we say it’s all worth it for this Lombok Waterfall. Tiu Kelep is one of the most stunning waterfalls we’ve ever seen!
Waterproof shoes are absolutely essential for adventures like Tiu Kelep Waterfall. This amazing pair of lightweight, waterproof sneakers made by Aleader are the perfect shoe to protect your feet during the wet, rocky, muddy and above all slippery hike to this majestic waterfall.
Do I Need A Guide or a Tour To Get There?
You definitely do not need a guide to get to Sendang Gile Waterfall, but for Tiu Kelep Waterfall you may or may not want one.
It’s not as simple as following a pathway because you also have to cross a river and jump over a few rocks to get there. In saying this, just follow the other people and you’ll get there just fine too.
If you don’t feel comfortable driving there on a motorbike, you can also book a day tour that will go to Tiu Kelep Waterfall among other locations around Lombok. Again, a tour is not really necessary to visit the waterfall but if you want to visit a few locations in one day in a private car then this is an option for you.
There are plenty of people selling tours on the side of the road in both Senggigi and Kuta.
Save Tiu Kelep Waterfall [ The Lombok Waterfall You Absolutely Can’t Miss ] For Later?
We were told the roads were broken just like Nusa Penida and it was completely deserted making it unsafe for us to go there by ourselves on a motorbike, but we went with our gut and past experiences and discovered zero broken roads and plenty of locals and tourists in the area.
So to finally answer this question, no you DO NOT need a tour or a guide to get to Tiu Kelep Waterfall, however if you are uncomfortable with the thought of getting lost in the dense Lombok jungle there is always the option to rent a tour guide just before you enter the trail for around 100k IDR (Indonesian Rupiah) which is equal to about $7 USD.
What Time To Go To Tiu Kelep Waterfall?
If you want to avoid the flocks of tourists then try to be at the waterfall sometime before 10am. Anytime after that the tours start arriving and the serene echoes of the waterfall will be overpowered by the sounds of cameras clicking and people yelling.
If 10am is too early for you, try to visit around 4:30pm. By this time most of the tourists have left the waterfall.
If you decide to go later in the day, keep in mind that you might be riding home in the dark.
Where To Stay When Visiting Tiu Kelep Waterfall?
We stayed in Senggigi and took a brutal 2-hour motorbike ride to Tiu Kelep Waterfall.
The road was paved the entire way but it was a long two hours sitting on a motorbike. It’s safe to say you won’t be able to feel your butt by the end of it.
We recommend staying in the town of Senaru when you want to visit Tiu Kelep Waterfall.
It’ll give you much more time to explore the waterfalls, Mount Rinjani and other sights around the north of Lombok without having to take 4 hours out of your day to travel there and back.
Although we didn’t stay in Senaru, our friends did and loved their stay at Rinjani Lodge. It’s located on the same street as the entrance to Tiu Kelep Waterfall and will take only about a 10-minute walk to get there. Not to mention there’s also a gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the breathtaking landscapes of Lombok.
